ARTIST STATEMENT

To me, dance is intentional movement. The intention could be release, experimentation, or improvisation. I use dance, specifically my choreography and performance, to create art that conveys a particular message. I also use dance as a tool to reflect on my life experiences and comment on social issues. Through my creative process as a choreographer and performer, dance allows me to delve into and discover more about my identity.

As an artist, I love involving myself in a variety of projects and investigating new experiences. This hunger for exploration leads me to collaborate with people of various backgrounds. I pride myself in connecting with others, and building a diverse network. I value community and supporting other artists. My craving for new and different experiences has led me to create a wide range of work. For instance, I have worked with props, projections, previously recorded audio, originally crafted audio, spoken word in the form of interviews and poetry, and more. My concepts have ranged from abstract to conveying a clear (and even political) message. My diverse body of repertory is a direct reflection of my diverse life experiences thus far.

In regards to teaching, I emphasize artistry and performance. It is important to me that my students experience the feeling of “actually dancing” during class. With that being said, I also make sure to convey the importance of safe alignment and clean technique. I have an eclectic training background, so I have a variety of techniques and pedagogical philosophies to offer. I am interested in how ideas from different techniques can be combined to portray one concept. Whether I am teaching, choreographing, or performing, dance allows me to exist in the present moment. I love that I can simultaneously engage and escape through dance.
